Four steps, in the order the Ministry asks them. Nothing here is filed and no identifier is checked against any department. Already registered?

There is no password at the end of this. The Ministry's fourth step sets one; this service has none and never will. Two separate codes are sent instead — one to your email, one to your mobile — and both are required.

The PAN is read for its structure only. Its fourth character is allocated by the Income Tax Department and states the kind of holder. Nothing is checked against any department, and no PAN is stored.
